HCGS meeting May 10th, 2014 at the University of Hawaii

On May 10, 2014 the Honolulu County Genealogical Society met at 9:30 AM in the lobby of the Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Upper Campus.

"The presenter, Dore Minatadani, one of the head librarian's gave an overview of the size, material content and resources available at the library. Although, she noted that they are not specifically genealogically orientated. She did provide valuable internet sites, references, and  library departments that may be helpful in finding names, stories in both mono graphic and serial materials as sources for research. She provided sources of indexes for Hawaiian, Business, Social and Cultural Directories which also would be helpful in finding names, dates and places pertaining to Hawaiian events dating back to the mid 1800's.
Her forte was in the Hawaiian Collection Reference Area of the library located on the 5th floor. The reading area is used predominately by researchers. It is a secured research area, where materials must be requested at the circulation desk, and cannot be removed unless multiple copies of the source is available. Students, faculty and former faculty affiliates have access at no cost to borrow materials. A community UH Card can be purchased at an annual cost of $60.00 USD, which will provide you with similar accessibility to that of a UH member with a few additional restrictions. They provide xeroxing at 10 cents a copy and scanning is free. However, you will need a flash drive to utilize this service."... " In general, the library is utilized by students, faculty and research patrons pursuing degrees of higher learning. However, the public does have access to library resources and services." - Summary written by Mona Morris, HCGS Member.
